21 Magic Money Prompts for Couples

Why These 21 Prompts Can Transform Your Marriage

As a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ and founder of The Richness Academy, I’ve worked with hundreds of Indian couples—doctors, entrepreneurs, IT professionals, retired couples, newlyweds, and even those navigating divorce.

Regardless of income or background, one thing always becomes clear in our sessions:

Money is never just about numbers—it’s about what it reveals.

It reveals values, beliefs, fears, power dynamics, trust, childhood wounds, and dreams. That’s why I created these 21 Magic Money Prompts—to help couples go beyond budgets and into meaningful, shared financial conversations.

These prompts have helped couples:

  • Save marriages
  • Shift from chaos to clarity
  • Build assets from scratch
  • Gain back control of their financial story

Now, I want you to experience the same transformation.

Let’s begin—together.

21 Magic Money Prompts for Couples

With Real Stories from My Coaching Practice

1. What assets are we building together?

I remember a young couple from Jaipur—earning well but had nothing to show. Their savings were parked in FDs and gold jewelry. We redirected those into SIPs, a joint emergency fund, and finally—term plans. Twelve months later, they proudly shared, “We finally feel like partners in growth.”

2. Is our house helping our cash flow—or trapping it?

A Noida-based couple had sunk everything into an under-construction flat. EMI + rent = ₹88K/month. No liquidity. I helped them rent that property out and downsize their lifestyle. Result? Freedom and a ₹35K monthly surplus for investing.

3. How financially educated are we—beyond our degrees?

A doctor couple from Pune once said, “We can save lives, but we’re clueless about money.” That hit hard. I coached them over 6 sessions—from compounding to STPs—and now, they’re teaching their kids about SIPs at dinner time.

4. Do we work only for money—or does our money work for us?

One couple in Mumbai earned ₹40L annually but lived paycheck-to-paycheck. We set up auto-SIPs, dividend funds, and mapped a passive income goal. Within 18 months, they were earning ₹1.2L annually from investments—without lifting a finger.

5. Are we investing in ourselves as a couple?

A Bengaluru couple had no budget for growth. Everything went into bills or gadgets. I asked them to invest ₹10,000 each in something new—he learned digital marketing, she joined a coaching program. Today, they co-run a small consulting business from home.

6. Can both of us read our financial statements?

A woman from Lucknow broke down during our session. Her husband had fallen ill, and she had no idea about their policies or investments. That day, we began her financial literacy journey. A year later, she’s the one coaching her friends on choosing mutual funds.

7. Are we building systems—or just surviving bills?

One Delhi couple earned handsomely—₹3L/month—but couldn’t explain where the money went. We introduced them to a “Couple Budget Framework,” fixed monthly money dates, and automated savings. Within 90 days, they had ₹90K in their new “Future Fund.”

8. Do we use debt to build income—or to buy comfort?

A Gurgaon couple had ₹13L in EMIs—mostly for a high-end SUV and a vacation loan. We realigned their thinking. They sold the car, rented it back on weekends, and used the freed-up funds to invest. Today, that investment pays for their next car—outright.

9. Do we pay ourselves first?

This is my favorite rule. I coached a newlywed couple to treat savings like a monthly EMI. They set up a ₹20K SIP auto-debit. “It feels like we’re paying our future,” they laughed. A year later, that fund paid for their first anniversary trip to Sikkim—guilt-free.

10. Are fear or ignorance stopping us from building wealth?

A client from Kolkata had ₹15L sitting in savings, too scared to invest. We demystified equity, risk, and compounding. Today, that same client is on track to retire 8 years early—with confidence, not fear.

11. What truly puts money in our pocket?

A couple in Chennai ran a boutique but barely broke even. In our clarity session, we discovered their real value was in workshops. We restructured their business—and now, their Sunday training sessions bring in more than weekday sales ever did.

12. What’s our passive income goal—and how are we creating it?

I ask every couple: “If you stopped working tomorrow, how long would your money last?” One engineer duo set up monthly income plans, and now their passive income matches 60% of their lifestyle. They’re on track to FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early).

13. Do we have a plan beyond our job?

COVID taught this the hard way. One couple, both in aviation, were laid off. Because we’d created a multi-source plan earlier, they had zero panic. Today, one teaches aviation online, the other opened a bakery—and both are financially free from 9–5.

14. How much tax are we legally saving—and how?

A CA couple had overlooked a simple HUF structure. I stepped in, and we saved ₹1.8L in taxes that year. They used that money to take their children to Dubai. Tax planning isn’t boring—it’s empowering.

15. How often do we learn something new—together?

One couple from Ahmedabad made it a ritual to join my quarterly masterclasses. “It’s our intellectual date night,” they told me. That learning not only made them wealthier—it made them wiser.

16. Do emotions control our spending—or do we?

A homemaker from Jaipur shared that she shopped online whenever she felt ignored. Her husband listened, really listened. They introduced a weekly “Couple Budget Chat,” and gave each other ₹5K/month guilt-free. Spending became conscious—and arguments stopped.

17. Are we broke—or just temporarily stuck?

A freelancer couple from Pune were facing a dry patch. They felt “poor.” I reminded them: “You’re not poor—you’re under construction.” That reframing gave them strength. Two years later, they’re debt-free and mentoring others.

18. Do we buy luxuries after income—or before?

A couple once shared proudly about their new iPhone 15s—on EMI. But they hadn’t started an emergency fund. We restructured priorities. Six months later, they bought a phone outright—with profits from an equity fund.

19. What risks are we not taking—because of fear?

A woman in Delhi had a viral food blog but was afraid to monetize it. I gave her a goal and structure. Today, her YouTube income funds her children’s school fees. Risk isn’t bad—if it’s informed.

20. How financially intelligent are we?

I once asked a retired couple to explain compounding. They couldn’t. We spent 2 sessions demystifying it. Two months later, they explained it at their housing society club! Intelligence compounds—just like money.

21. Do we have a system to protect our wealth?

A woman in Gurugram couldn’t claim her late husband’s fixed deposit because there was no nominee. Since then, I insist every couple create a “Wealth Safety File”: wills, passwords, nominees, insurance—all in one place. Peace of mind is the real legacy.
